Middle East Related Scholarships

Gary and Patricia Leiser Scholarship in Middle Eastern Languages

Number of Awards: Varies

Amount: $500

Criteria: Scholarships granted by the Middle East Studies Center for the study of Middle Eastern languages. Current enrollment in Arabic, Persian, or Turkish language is required. Minimum GPA is 3.25. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and demonstrate a serious interest in the Middle East by taking courses related to the region, although not necessarily a Middle East Studies degree program.

Application Process: Submit the application form (available from Middle East Studies Center or International Affairs, East Hall), a short essay on how this program will contribute to future activity, unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, and a letter of recommendation from your area studies Adviser. Scholarship awards will be made by a committee chaired by the Director of the Middle East Studies Center.

Deadline: Submit a completed application to the Middle East Studies Center, (503) 725-4074, by April 15.

Elizabeth Ducey Scholarship

Number of Awards: Varies

Amount: Up to $600; average award of $200

Criteria: Application accepted from any student intending to study for a specialty in Middle East Studies. Available to help finance study abroad. Students must be enrolled in and making satisfactory progress in a Middle Eastern language. This is also applicable for any term to students studying in the Middle Eastern Consortium summer program or any of the consortium schools.

Application Process: Submit application form (from the Office of Education Abroad of the Middle East Studies Center), a short essay on how this program will contribute to future activity, unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, and a letter of recommendation from area adviser. Scholarship awards are determined by the International Education Services/Study Abroad Scholarship Committee.

Noury and Lamia al-Khaledy Scholarship for Arabic Studies

Number of Awards: 3-4 annually

Amount: Varies

Criteria: This renewable scholarship is open to all full-time PSU students graduates and undergraduates of all majors who have formally studied Arabic for at least two years; had an outstanding performance in previous Arabic studies; have a cumulative GPA of 3.40 or higher; and a commitment to successfully complete third-year Arabic and spoken Arabic, or minor in Arabic at PSU. School performance and financial need are a major consideration.

Application Process: Applications available last week of March at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
